I’ve asked Mom, “What was Dad like when I was a baby?” many times before.

Now that Waverly is here I don’t have to ask…I can see for myself: he was a big goofball! And as he states ‘This is what gave her the great personality she has today’…and he’s probably right. I love you Dad!

PS: was that a Waverly smile? We think yes…

Waves takes flight!

We flew to New Orleans for a wedding I was in and I had been nervous about this trip coming up or a while now. I’ve seen the chaos a baby/toddler can unleash on a plane & it’s passengers and I’ve been the person who just wanted to scream “Can you shut that kid up? We’re flying ova here!” I didn’t want to be the one getting the looks of disapproval from strangers across the aisle.

We were pretty well prepared for the trip with a well-stocked diaper bag & with my sweet Mom coming along to help with the babysitting duties. We all got to the airport, checked our luggage & got our boarding passes - no problem. Then came the gauntlet. The big show. Security.

Security with a baby & stroller can be daunting. Once you’ve stripped down your own metallic acessories and shoes - surrendered your liquids & laptops then you have to get the baby through. This requires that you take her out of the carseat, disassemble your stroller system and get it through x-ray machine all the while people are stomping past you with their grey bins & boarding passes in their mouths. I don’t mind people passing me up in line really. I have a baby, I’m taking a long time, I’d pass me up too.

So once I was stepping through the metal detector with her I was like ‘yes, we did it!’…not really. The end of security was the worst part. I got pulled aside so they could test my bottles full of breast milk WHILE I was trying to put her back in her car seat, put my shoes back on, & make sure we weren’t trampled by pedestrians. It feels like the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona just minus the white outfits and red scarfs.

Finally, thru security. *Huge sigh of relief* From there we were really home free. Waverly was awake but not fussy & I had a bottle ready just in case. We had gotten there plenty early just in case it was more difficult than we thought so we spent a large amount of time baby-bouncing at the gate.

Once it was time to board we checked the stroller at the gate which was really easy surprisingly, and headed to our seats. We bought a seat for Waverly’s car seat (she really loves her car seat)…and I guess people don’t do that often. We kept getting wierd looks when she had her own boarding pass & when we walked on board with her car seat in hand. But I would recommend it. You get more space even if you end of holding the baby in your lap the whole time anyways. I was able to spread out a bit & change her diaper right there in her seat.

I fed her the bottle during take-off and didn’t notice any issues with her ears thank goodness. She ate & napped during most of the flight with a little bit of fuss at the end but I was able to nurse her and calm her down. When we landed we were pleased with ourselves & overall the experience was pretty painless. Note: having a quiet baby is an important factor to this equation.

Coming home was just as easy. Same security process hassles but that’s just flying these days I suppose. I nursed her at the gate & she slept the entire flight home. It was a breeze.

So now we call her our ‘good little traveler’…We’ll get to test this out again in June when we fly to Vail.

Lucky in the air & on the ground…RW
